2/28

Today I decided to play with some digital tools. A friend of mine, Abby Sturges (www.abbysturges.com), posted a photo of some beautiful oranges a few months ago. I was intrigued by the color gradient in the fruit and saved the image as inspiration. Here's the (cropped) original.

I constrained myself to a one-session quick study in Illustrator. I started by building out the gradients and moving them around in different arrangements. The piece felt pretty sterile and didn't have any attachment to the organic inspiration. I poked around with compound scaled shapes and distributions to resolve that feeling. Here's what I came up with tonight. Two day streak!

Blood Orange Sequence

I'm starting this month with a portrait of a special woman in my life. Pooja was in town for the weekend, and we closed out her visit with a sunset trip to Ocean Beach.

I haven't done much digital photography. I did a bit of film exploration in school, but that's been on the back burner for a while now. Part of my motivation for kicking off "28 Days of Make" was to get back into more frequent photography, so I'm happy to start the series with this image.

Autumn, revisited

It's going on a year since I've done any upkeep on this website. Rather than unleashing a deluge of updates in one post, it's my goal to stay continuously creative in the upcoming weeks. I'm at a temporary pause in my day-to-day work, and I fully intend to make the most of this time away from structure.

In addition to cooking, eating, playing, and exploring, I'm excited to get back into personal projects. For the next twenty-eight days, I will be creating at least one thing each day. I'll be posting my work here. Let's see what happens!

Autumn

My summer trip was originally planned as a four-ish week jaunt to visit some friends. As I spent more and more time on the road, I realized how much fun I was having and how far I was from being done exploring. I ended up stretching the trip to a full ten weeks... and without a doubt had the most amazing series of experiences of my life. I'm currently curating the hundreds of photographs from the journey and will try to shake a few free as soon as possible.
I edited this new version of my website whenever I had the chance, often paying my multi-hour rent at cafes by drinking way too many rounds of coffee. Most of the entries at this point have documentation but are lacking in copy, and I'm trying to remedy that swiftly. This portfolio will never be static, but I hope it will soon be fully current.

Transitions

I've just begun an overhaul of my website. It's probably most evident in the layout (switched my CMS from Indexhibit to Squarespace), but I'm hoping to take this opportunity to both refresh the actual content of my portfolio as well.

I'm also about to start a seven week road trip taking the long way to Portland, so of course my plan to redo my website was perfectly timed.
